A Shrinking Economy Means More Child Abuse and Neglect |

It's a sad fact of life that during times of economic stress rates of child abuse and neglect go up at the same time that governmental agencies have less resources for mitigating child abuse and neglect because of a shrinking tax base. This is a terrible cycle and there's seemingly no way to break it until the economy gets better. However, if states and municipalities have the will to address rising child abuse statistics, they can increase the budgets for anti child abuse and neglect programs like educating parents, especially parents from lower socioeconomic groups and providing free daycare for parents who are looking for jobs. These are some of the things that government can do to prevent all types of child abuse, but everyone in a community needs to be aware when child abuse and neglect are problems and be vigilant about reporting suspected abuse to the authorities. It's especially important to be tuned into the problems of child abuse and neglect during troubled economic times and for neighbors to help each other and try to lessen the stress of parents who may have lost their jobs or are underemployed and are forced to work multiple jobs to try to make ends meet. |
