Fortunately, organizations such as Childhelp exist to combat the nation's problem of child abuse and neglect. For each statistic, there are child abuse pics and stories which further deepen America's wound. Child abuse accounts for physical, emotional or sexual abuse. Neglect is basically the deprivation of a child's basic physiological and emotional needs.

Not only is Childhelp the leading organization against child abuse and neglect, it is also the oldest nonprofit organization fighting against child abuse and neglect. Childhelp began in 1959 by former actresses Yvonne Fedderson and Sara O'Meara. Although Childhelp is an organization that currently focuses on domestic cases of child abuse and neglect, Childhelp began in Japan where the actresses had been entertaining the troops. The actresses came across orphaned children on the streets during a typhoon storm.

Fedderson and O'Meara were compassionate enough to aid the children and find them orphanages, after bouts of difficulty due to the children's mixed ethnicity in the racially homogeneous country.

Good friend, Nancy Reagan, eventually asked Fedderson and O'Meara to focus on the domestic issues concerning child abuse and neglect.
